Conservative treatment for scoliosis

Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine where the normal curves of the spine are changed sideways.

These alterations, besides being aesthetic are associated to pain and neurological symptoms, since by a deviated position of the spine muscular fatigue is generated and the resulting spinal imbalance wears away the vertebral disc.

Patients who manifest pain require a medical evaluation so that the origin can be medically determined. Furthermore, this evaluation is more important when patients, in addition to pain, present a chest deformity or symptoms of numbness.

Causes of Scoliosis

  • Neuromuscular type.
  • Congenital (birth).
  • Idiopathic (when no specific cause is found)

Conservative treatment for scoliosis

Conservative treatment for scoliosis refers to non-invasive measures, such as surgery.. It may involve a range of pain management medications and therapies, for example:

  • Electro-therapeutic modalities: electrical stimulation, TENS, high voltage stimulation
  • Physical agents: thermotherapy.
  • Mechanical modalities: manual therapy techniques, massage, therapeutic massage

Modalities of the exercise

  • Body mechanics: training in postural control and hygiene
  • Flexibility exercises: range of motion and stretching
  • Relaxation: breathing exercises and relaxation techniques
  • Strength and endurance training of head, neck, midsection, pelvic floor and extremities
  • Balance and coordination: training of the motor function
