Can getting hit be the cause of a herniated disc?

Getting hit can cause disc herniation, which is considered a multifactorial disorder; one of these factors could be a blow to the body. Patients often find hard to know what exactly originated the hernia; an impact on the back is a proven common cause.

People whose jobs require a certain physical strain are more prone to back problems. Some other risk factors are being overweight and genetic predisposition.

A herniated disc is an injury to the cushioning between the vertebrae that make up the spine. They generally appear in the low back, but the pain can extend up to the neck.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Pain in the arms or legs than can make its way to the shoulders, feet, glutes, thighs and calves.
  • Numbness and tingling sensation on the parts of the body close to the affected nerves.
  • The increased risk of falling down and the impairment of the ability to lift or hold objects caused by extreme weakness

Some patients might present just one or even none of the symptoms. However, it would be best to go to the doctor if the pain extends and comes along with numbness and weakness.

What to do in case of a herniated disc

Exercise, good posture, and keeping a healthy weight are the best recommendations for someone wanting to prevent a herniated disc, though anybody is at risk of a blow to the back. The recommended treatment includes analgesics, muscle relaxers, and even surgery in more extreme cases. Physiotherapy is also advised in more conservative and traditional treatments, since it can help the patient have a better disposition to bearing pain, as well as a set of exercises for minimizing it.
