Sciatic pain: most common causes

We call sciatic pain or simply "sciatica" to the pain located from the upper central part of the buttock to the thigh. This type of pain can be very sharp and cause loss of mobility. Learn more about the common causes of this type of pain in the following paragraphs.

The sciatic nerve

The sciatic nerve is actually a set of nerve roots that descend down the spine into the lumbar region and down to the sole of the foot. It is in charge of controlling the muscles of the back of the knee and the back of the leg. It is also in charge of sensitivity in this area, all the way to the sole of the foot.

Sciatic pain: most common causes

Sciatic pain can be caused by injury or damage to the nerve roots mentioned above. This pain can appear suddenly, when changing position while lying down, when standing or sitting, when making sudden movements such as sneezing or coughing. It can become very intense and prevent adequate mobility

Some of its most common causes include:

  • • Herniated disc.
  • • Spinal Stenosis (narrowing of the spine)..
  • • Injuries or fractures to the pelvis.
  • • Piriform syndrome (muscle spasms in the buttocks)

Treatment for sciatic pain

As you can seesciatic pain is a symptom of other conditions that need to be addressed in order to eliminate the pain. In that sense, it is necessary to identify the cause of the pain in order to determine the best course of treatment. Such treatment may include analgesic medications to relieve pain, physical therapy and, depending on the underlying cause, surgery to correct problems in the spine.

The CCV has minimally invasive treatments for many of these conditions, so you can avoid the risk of surgery.

General Precautions

Exercise, avoid being overweight and sedentary. In this way, you will have less risk of suffering any of the back and spinal conditions that cause sciatica.
