How do I know if I suffer from lumbago?

Does your back hurt? Your waist? Have you asked yourself: how do I know if I suffer from lumbago?
It is very common for Mexicans to have a problem of this type. In fact, up to 94 % of the population has this discomfort at some point in their lives.

The lumbar area covers from the back to the waist, and when there is presence of pain that goes to the buttocks and thighs and that intensifies when bending down or getting up, we are dealing with lumbago.

It is common for pain to appear after great effort with inadequate posture, for example, carrying things without protection or doing a bad technique when exercising. It can also happen after a hit or a fall.

Why does lumbago appear?

Even though lumbago appears suddenly, with age and obesity the problems get worse. Take note of the following risk factors:

  • • I have a high Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • • My routine follows a sedentary life.
  • • My job requires me to carry heavy objects.
  • • In my job I have to bend or twist my trunk.
  • • I have little physical conditioning.
  • • I have work-related stress.
  • • I suffer from some psychosocial disorder (depression, insomnia, violence, tiredness, etc.).

All of this increases the risk of suffering from lumbago and if it is not treated properly it can cause long periods of disability.

What to do?

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMMS) recommends that you learn to take care of your back and advises that exercise and healthy eating are the basis for strengthening your spine.

Other recommendations include

  • • To rest for three days.
  • • To stop activities that increase the pain.
  • • To apply heat therapy.
  • • To go to the doctor.

Under the observation of a specialist you will be able to know the seriousness of your problem. The doctor will ask questions, explore and if necessary will run some laboratory and imaging tests.
